Aldi’s announcement of opening 40 new stores in the UK this year signals a significant expansion plan. The budget-friendly supermarket chain is set to invest £370 million to establish new locations in various areas like Southam in Warwickshire, Hastings in East Sussex, and Amersham in Buckinghamshire. This initiative is part of a larger £1.6 billion investment program unveiled last year, aimed at achieving Aldi’s target of 1,500 stores across the UK.
Giles Hurley, the Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, emphasized the brand’s commitment to providing high-quality, affordable groceries to all consumers. He highlighted the importance of ensuring accessibility to such products and expressed the company’s goal of filling gaps in areas without Aldi stores. Aldi’s mission is rooted in the belief that quality food should be affordable for everyone, not just a select few.
Aldi’s dedication to cost-effectiveness is evident in its recent accolades. The supermarket was named the UK’s cheapest by consumer group Which? for the fifth consecutive year. Additionally, Aldi secured the top spot in The Grocer’s ‘Super Grocer 33’ survey for the seventh time in a row, reaffirming its reputation as the preferred choice for British shoppers seeking value.
To further support its workforce, Aldi announced an increase in pay rates for store colleagues, with hourly rates set to rise nationally and within the M25 area. The adjustments, effective from March 1, 2026, aim to provide competitive wages and enhance employee satisfaction.
In 2025, Aldi maintained its position as the cheapest supermarket, outperforming competitors such as Lidl in ten out of 12 months. Despite stiff competition, Aldi’s average monthly price difference with Lidl was a mere 77p throughout the year. Notably, Aldi’s affordability was underscored in December, where it offered a list of 68 items at a lower average cost than other major supermarkets like Lidl, Asda, and Tesco.
Aldi’s ongoing commitment to providing quality, affordability, and value to consumers continues to solidify its position as a leading player in the UK grocery market.
