A tragic incident unfolded during what was meant to be a joyful outing for Brittany Clark, transforming a day of leisure into a nightmare despite frantic efforts to rescue her.

Brittany, a 31-year-old resident of Orlando, was on a hiking excursion at Florida’s Little Big Econ State Forest with her boyfriend, Chance Allison, and her close friend, Jayden Hernandez, on June 28. At approximately 1:30 p.m., while taking a break to swim in the Econlockhatchee River, a 13-foot alligator approached them stealthily in the shallow three-foot-deep water. Without warning, the alligator viciously attacked Brittany, causing severe injuries by tearing off both her arms.

According to a medical examiner’s report, the alligator initiated a “death roll” maneuver by grabbing Brittany’s arm during the swim, prompting Chance to intervene in a bid to free her. Despite his brave efforts to wrestle with the alligator, Brittany sustained fatal injuries during the struggle.

In the aftermath, Chance made a distress call to emergency services, describing the dire situation and Brittany’s critical condition as she bled profusely from the grievous wounds. Despite managing to momentarily release Brittany from the alligator’s grip, the damage was irreversible, leading to her untimely demise en route to the hospital.

Following the tragic incident, authorities captured and euthanized two alligators, one measuring 13 feet at the scene and another 12.5 feet away, for further investigation. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission expressed condolences to Brittany’s family and friends, acknowledging the ongoing probe into the incident.

Jayden, Brittany’s best friend, paid tribute to her on social media, recounting the heart-wrenching turn of events during the attack. She emphasized the suddenness of the assault, reflecting on the moments leading up to the tragic incident and the subsequent desperate attempt to seek help.

An online fundraiser has been set up by Brittany’s aunt to facilitate the repatriation of her remains to California, describing her as a vibrant individual passionate about her pets and hobbies like firearms and motorcycles. The popular Barr Street Trailhead, where the attack occurred, has been closed until further notice as investigations continue into the rare but territorial behavior of alligators, particularly during their mating season.
