“Amazon Conducts Drone Test Flights for UK Delivery Service”

Published on

Amazon has initiated test flights with its drones in preparation for the launch of its airborne delivery service in the UK. The US tech giant confirmed that a limited number of flights have been conducted from its base at Symmetry Park in Darlington, Co Durham, but the drone delivery service for customers has not yet been rolled out.

Last January, Amazon announced Darlington as its test center in the UK, where eligible customers in the town will soon be able to receive packages weighing less than five pounds (2.3kg) within a two-hour timeframe. The latest drone model, the MK30, is equipped with advanced technology to navigate around obstacles and ensure the safety of individuals, pets, and property.

David Carbon, vice president of Prime Air at Amazon, emphasized that the drones are designed to operate quietly and efficiently, with safety being a top priority. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the commencement of Prime Air drone flights from the Darlington fulfillment center but clarified that deliveries are not currently being made, with the official service launch expected in 2026.

The drones are fitted with technology to detect and avoid obstacles such as clotheslines or trampolines, which may not be visible on satellite maps. The devices use cameras to monitor the surrounding airspace during flight, making real-time decisions to evade any other aircraft entering their path. These drones are programmed with sophisticated machine learning models to identify various objects, including people, animals, physical barriers, and other drones or airborne vehicles.
