A father made a significant career change by leaving his high-paying job in the United States to take on a less lucrative role in Yorkshire, England. Tom Bateman, 35, and his wife Brittany, 36, who had been residing in the US for 17 years, made the decision to relocate to England to raise their four children.
Tom, who had a successful corporate marketing career in America earning over $200,000 (£150,000) annually, felt confined by his achievements and yearned for the British sense of humor and wit. Wanting to be closer to his family, he opted for an 80% reduction in salary to work alongside his father, Phil, 64, in Bradford, teaching children bike lessons for £30,000 per year. The couple embraced a simpler lifestyle after selling off their possessions in the US.
Expressing his feelings, Tom mentioned, “I felt increasingly trapped by the trappings of success. The financial obligations I accumulated made change seem daunting. It wasn’t a crisis of age but of circumstances. I desired more meaningful contributions and closer family connections.”
Tom and Brittany, who met in York in 2007 while attending Bible college at 17, have traversed between the UK and the US before settling in California, where they tied the knot and established their life. They later resided in Chicago while Tom pursued his education before returning to California for work in corporate marketing. Subsequently, they moved to Idaho for a more affordable lifestyle.
Despite enjoying their time in America, Tom longed for the intangible aspects of British culture. He highlighted the subtleties of British humor, sarcasm, and social interactions that he missed, emphasizing the unique cultural nuances that are challenging to articulate to outsiders.
With a stronger desire to reunite with his family in England, Tom’s decision was also influenced by his brother’s untimely passing in 2016, which reshaped his priorities and underscored the importance of familial bonds. Brittany, who homeschools their children aged between six and 12, shares Tom’s enthusiasm for the move, appreciating the charm of English countryside walks and quaint village life.
The family plans to bring their two doodle mixes, Charlie and Mabel, with them as they make the transatlantic move. While Tom anticipates rekindling relationships with family, he eagerly awaits indulging in British delights such as Greggs, authentic curry, and a pint at the local pub.
Looking ahead, the couple is excited about exploring the Yorkshire Dales at a leisurely pace without the constraints of a brief vacation. As the relocation day nears, the magnitude of their decision is yet to fully sink in for Tom, who reflects on the transition from being visitors to permanent residents, acknowledging the forthcoming reality of their new chapter.
