Anna Huang’s experience at the CPKC Women’s Open last year marked a significant milestone in her golf journey. As a 16-year-old, she struggled in Mississauga, Ont., missing the cut and feeling uncertain about her future. Huang recalled her disappointment, saying, “I wasn’t playing very well at that time. I’d missed four or five cuts in a row.”
Following her early exit at the tournament, Huang dedicated herself to improvement. With the guidance of her caddie and coach Sean Burke, she focused intensely on her putting skills and various technical aspects. Reflecting on her efforts, Huang remarked, “The practice and support I received in Mississauga had a profound impact on what followed, which turned out to be very positive.”
Shortly after, Huang achieved back-to-back victories on the Ladies European Tour. Her success continued with another win in Morocco in May, but it was her triumph at the PIF London Championship on August 9 that garnered widespread attention in the women’s golf community. At 17 years, 9 months, and 10 days old, Huang became the youngest player to secure four LET titles, surpassing the previous record set by New Zealand’s Lydia Ko at 18 years old.
Having defeated world No. 6 Charley Hull at the PIF London Championship, Huang is now entering this year’s CPKC Women’s Open with a newfound sense of confidence. Recalling her mindset from the previous year, Huang noted, “Last year when I played the Canadian Open, I had zero wins under my belt, and I was a rookie.” Now, with more experience from participating in six majors and numerous LPGA events, she feels better prepared for the challenges ahead.
The prestigious $2.75-million US CPKC Women’s Open is set to commence, returning to Edmonton’s Royal Mayfair Golf Club. Huang is part of a rising generation of Canadian teenage golf talents, alongside players like Aphrodite Deng from Calgary. Deng, who excelled as the low amateur in last year’s event, expressed her growing confidence and comfort on the course, fueled by her recent achievements and experiences.
Both Huang and Deng, along with 16-year-old Clairey Lin from Langley, B.C., have earned sponsor exemptions to compete in the CPKC Women’s Open. Lin, who clinched consecutive victories at the U.S. Girls Junior Championship, adds to the impressive lineup of Canadian golfers making waves in the sport.
