Armed police and an air ambulance responded to an incident in Whitefield, Greater Manchester earlier today. Witnesses reported seeing damaged cars, undercover police vehicles, and a significant police presence on Bury New Road.
According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), officers tried to stop a vehicle at around 3pm. The driver allegedly attempted to flee by driving at police officers, leading to a firearms officer firing a single shot. The driver sustained a non-life-threatening arm injury and has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the distribution of Class A drugs.
Residents in the area mentioned hearing what they believed to be gunshots around 3:30pm before the arrival of an air ambulance. The local council advised motorists to avoid the area due to increasing traffic congestion.
Inrix, a traffic monitoring platform, reported the closure of A56 Bury New Road in both directions due to the police incident. Images from the scene showed a white car surrounded by multiple vehicles and law enforcement personnel.
Detective Superintendent Joe Harrop reassured the public, stating that no civilians or officers were harmed during the incident. GMP reiterated the details of the event, emphasizing that investigations are ongoing.
The situation unfolded after armed police rushed to the location following reports of gunfire, as per MEN. The area remained cordoned off as authorities continued their inquiries.
