Army Officials Deny Charges in Soldier’s Suicide

Published on

Two high-ranking Army officials have refuted accusations in connection with the tragic death of young soldier Jaysley Beck, who took her own life after being sexually assaulted by a superior.

Colonel Samantha Shepherd and Major James Hook appeared via video link at the Military Court Centre in Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, where they both denied charges of “conduct prejudicial to good order and service discipline”. These charges pertain to their handling of information preceding Gunner Beck’s suicide at Larkhill Camp, Wiltshire, in 2021.

Previously, former senior non-commissioned officer Michael Webber, aged 43, was sentenced to six months in military prison after admitting to sexually assaulting Gunner Beck five months before her death. An investigation into the 19-year-old’s demise found that the incident and the Army’s failure to act appropriately significantly contributed to her tragedy.

Shepherd has pleaded not guilty to two charges of conduct prejudicial to good order and service discipline. The first charge alleges that she failed to report an alleged sexual assault to the service police in July 2021. The second charge accuses her of misreporting information provided by Jaysley Beck to another individual during the same month. Hook also pleaded not guilty to a similar charge related to his handling of information from Gunner Beck.

The defendants were informed by Judge Adjutant General Alan Large that their trial is scheduled for September 14, with the location yet to be determined between Catterick and Bulford Camp in Wiltshire. Another case management session is set for June 23, during which Gunner Beck’s family members observed the proceedings.

It was disclosed that Hook serves with 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, while Shepherd, appearing from the United States, is stationed with the British Defence Staff. Gunner Beck’s mother, Leighann McCready, expressed dissatisfaction with the Army’s response to the situation, particularly regarding the implementation of a new independent complaints process for military personnel.

Reports indicate that Gunner Beck had reported the assault to Army authorities twice, but the incidents were not escalated to the police as per Army guidelines. Following the assault, Webber, who is reportedly married with children, faced minor administrative measures without legal consequences, while Gunner Beck tragically passed away in her barracks in December 2021.

In a statement, McCready emphasized the devastating impact of the Army’s mishandling of the case, condemning the lack of proper action that could have potentially saved her daughter’s life. She highlighted the urgent need for reforms within the military to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Both the inquest into Gunner Beck’s death and Webber’s court martial revealed details of the assault and the subsequent failures in reporting and addressing the incident, underscoring the need for accountability and systemic changes to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
