Toronto police have announced that a man has been arrested and charged following the arson attack on several vehicles at the residence of a Scarborough MP. The suspect, identified as Roshvin Crofton, 24, faces multiple charges including arson causing property damage, mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offense, possession of incendiary material, and failure to comply with a probation order. Additionally, a 2025 Hyundai Sonata linked to the incident has been confiscated, and authorities are seeking information on its whereabouts leading up to the arson.
Authorities are also on the lookout for a second suspect in connection with the case. The arson incident took place in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s home, who represents the Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East federal riding. According to police reports, an unidentified individual approached the vehicles in the driveway on August 27, poured an accelerant on them, set two cars on fire, and fled the scene, causing damage to a third vehicle in the process.
Following the arrest, Zahid expressed gratitude towards the Toronto police for their swift action. She stated that while an arrest has been made, the motive behind the arson is still unknown, emphasizing the need for further investigation to uncover the reasons behind the attack. Zahid, a Liberal backbencher serving as an MP for Scarborough Centre since 2015, chairs the standing committee on science and research and is the vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association.
The incident has sparked condemnation from various political figures, with Prime Minister Mark Carney labeling it as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.” The ongoing investigation aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the arson attack and bring all involved individuals to justice.
