Authorities have cracked down on an illegal streaming platform that provided unauthorized access to premium content from Sky TV. The operation, which resulted in the closure of the service, took place in Manchester, leading to the arrest of four individuals and the seizure of equipment valued at £750,000.

The investigation was initiated after Sky detected suspicious activities related to a large-scale illegal streaming network. The illicit IPTV service allegedly catered to millions of users across the UK, with one suspect reportedly earning over £3 million from the operation. While homes accessing the streams have not been targeted, they will no longer be able to view the blocked content on their TVs.

Detective Constable Jordan Day from the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) at the City of London Police emphasized the serious nature of such illegal services, labeling them as organized criminal operations that generate substantial illicit profits. Day highlighted the importance of safeguarding broadcasting integrity and protecting consumers from the risks associated with illegal streaming platforms.

Matt Hibbert, Group Director of Anti-Piracy at Sky, commended the decisive action taken against the pirate operation by law enforcement. He reiterated Sky’s commitment to combatting piracy and safeguarding their content investment, emphasizing the risks associated with illegal streaming, including potential security threats like malware.

Research by BeStreamWise revealed that a significant portion of illegal streamers have encountered security issues such as malware, underscoring the dangers of engaging in unauthorized streaming activities.
