Auto theft in Ontario has seen an 8.4% decrease in the first half of this year, as per a recent report from Équité Association. The report reveals that 8,796 vehicles were stolen in the province during the initial six months of 2026, compared to 9,601 in the same period last year.

This decline follows the implementation of a national action plan in 2024 by the federal government in response to the significant rise in auto thefts, particularly in Ontario and the Toronto region. The plan involved bolstering customs intelligence, exploring new detection technologies, and regulating the distribution of radio devices used for auto theft.

Dominic Monchamp, the director of investigation, intelligence, and investigative operations at Équité Association, emphasized the pivotal role of the action plan. He highlighted the increased active surveillance for detecting auto theft and improved coordination with law enforcement agencies.

However, Toronto has experienced an 8.8% increase in auto thefts so far this year. In contrast, by the end of 2025, auto thefts in Toronto had decreased by 32.2%, according to Nadine Ramadan, a spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service. She mentioned the complexity of attributing these trends to a single factor and reiterated the ongoing collaboration with law enforcement partners to combat such crimes.

Just three years ago, Toronto witnessed over 12,000 vehicle thefts in a year, totaling $790 million in value, as reported by Toronto police. Of the approximately 70,000 vehicles stolen nationwide that year, around 30,000 were from Ontario, according to Équité Association.

The downward trend in auto thefts extends across Canada in 2026, with a 10.1% reduction compared to the previous year. The report indicates varying decreases in stolen vehicle numbers across different regions, with Alberta experiencing the highest decline at 15.1% and Atlantic Canada the lowest at 4.1%.

While Canada is observing a decline in auto theft incidents, Monchamp stressed the importance of auto manufacturers safeguarding against cyber attacks to sustain this positive trend. He highlighted the misuse of small radio devices by organized crime groups to facilitate car thefts, emphasizing the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures in vehicles.

Manufacturers are actively addressing cybersecurity threats by updating software, incorporating tracking systems, and enabling phone connectivity for tamper alerts. Lucas Malinowski, president of Global Automakers of Canada, noted the industry’s commitment to enhancing security features to deter thieves and collaborating with insurers and law enforcement to address vulnerabilities exploited by criminal groups.

A recent Équité survey of 2,503 Canadian adults conducted from June 1 to June 8 revealed that nearly 75% of respondents advocate for mandatory anti-theft technology in vehicles. Only 18% believe that current vehicles are adequately equipped to withstand modern technology-based theft methods.
