“Backlash Grows Over Postponed UK Hunting Trophy Ban”

Keir Starmer is facing backlash from prominent figures and activists for postponing the proposed ban on importing hunting trophies following pressure from the Trump administration. Advocates have revealed that the ban, outlined in Labour’s 2024 manifesto, will not be included in the upcoming parliamentary session. This decision comes after reports exposed lobbying efforts by Trump’s associates to block the ban. Furthermore, it has been disclosed that the Labour government has issued 28 import permits to British trophy hunters, including permits for endangered species such as African elephants, hippopotamuses, American black bears, brown bears, Nile crocodiles, giraffes, and lions.

Various celebrities and athletes, including Frank Bruno, Gary Numan, David Essex, Nicky Campbell, Lorraine Kelly, Joanna Lumley, David Harewood, Felicity Kendal, Patsy Kensit, Miriam Margolyes, Heather Mills, Cliff Richard, Peter Shilton, and others, have joined forces to demand a clear timeline for implementing the ban in the upcoming parliamentary session.

Dame Joanna Lumley expressed her dismay, emphasizing that it is distressing and unacceptable for magnificent animals to be killed for trophies. The continuous delay in enforcing the ban was criticized by broadcaster Chris Packham, who condemned trophy hunting as abhorrent.

Despite repeated delays, Defra minister Mary Creagh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to banning hunting trophies last year. A Defra spokesperson reiterated the government’s dedication to animal welfare and confirmed plans to introduce legislation for the ban as soon as parliamentary time permits.

Eduardo Goncalves, the founder of the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting, highlighted the intense lobbying efforts by the Trump administration to hinder the ban. The administration’s actions have raised concerns about the potential impact on wildlife and conservation efforts. Goncalves stressed the importance of not allowing external influences to dictate UK policies.

The urgency to implement the ban was underscored in a letter signed by a coalition of public figures and activists, urging Keir Starmer to fulfill the Labour Party’s pledge to prohibit hunting trophies. The letter emphasized the widespread support for the ban from various political parties and the public, calling for immediate action to end this cruel practice.
