An albino buffalo in Bangladesh, nicknamed “Donald Trump” for its unique blonde hairdo, has been saved from a ritual slaughter during Eid festivities following a surge in public interest. Authorities intervened after the animal was sold for sacrifice, citing safety concerns amidst growing attention. The buffalo, now housed in the national zoo in Dhaka, was spared at the last minute, with the buyer receiving compensation.
The decision to spare the buffalo was made due to security worries and the heightened public fascination with the animal, which had gained online viral fame. Crowds flocked to the farm to catch a glimpse of the buffalo’s distinctive blond tuft. Owner Ziauddin Mridha revealed that the buffalo was named after the US President due to its resemblance to Donald Trump, as noted by his brother.
Albino buffalos are a rarity in Bangladesh where most are dark-colored, making this particular buffalo a standout during the Eid livestock season. While Bangladesh typically witnesses a high number of animal sacrifices during Eid al-Adha, this year saw a decline possibly due to elevated livestock prices, impacting lower-income families. Analysts suggest that the cost of living crisis has forced many to cut back on meat expenditures, affecting the traditional sacrificial practices during the festival.
