“Bayeux Tapestry Covertly Transported to UK for Exhibition”

Published on

Nearly a millennium of history was carefully transported to the UK under the cover of darkness in a joint operation involving British and French law enforcement agencies.

The renowned Bayeux Tapestry embarked on an 11-hour journey from northern France, departing at 6:15 pm on Thursday, traveling through the Channel tunnel on a shuttle train. Upon its arrival in London around 3 am on Friday, the Metropolitan Police Service and Kent Police oversaw its safe transfer, bringing the covert mission to a successful conclusion.

The ancient artifact, depicting the Norman Conquest of 1066, was intricately folded and secured in a climate-controlled case with shock-absorbing protection for its 70-meter length during the journey.

Although commonly referred to as a tapestry, this nearly 960-year-old masterpiece is actually linen adorned with embroidered images of historical significance.

The meticulous operation to safeguard the Bayeux Tapestry continues, with the artifact undergoing acclimatization and condition checks by British Museum staff in the following weeks. Subsequently, the tapestry will be unfurled and readied for an exhibition described by the museum as a “once-in-a-generation” event.

An estimated 7.5 million visitors are anticipated to view the tapestry in London during its showcase from September to July 2027. Following the launch of ticket sales, which generated over £2.4 million in the first 24 hours with online queues lasting up to nine hours, French President Emmanuel Macron commended the collaborative effort between France and the UK.

Macron, in a statement to The Times, lauded the loan as a symbol of enduring friendship and mutual aspirations for the future between the two nations. After being on display at the Bayeux Tapestry Museum in Normandy since 1983, the artifact will return following the museum’s renovation.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy hailed the exhibition as a “unique opportunity,” emphasizing the historical significance and friendship embodied by the tapestry’s return after nearly a millennium.

Dr. Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the British Museum, expressed gratitude for the joint effort with UK and French partners, anticipating the exhibition’s opening to the public in September with great anticipation.
