Renowned BBC actor John Woodvine, known for his distinguished acting career, has left substantial gifts in his will for his family. Woodvine, who passed away at the age of 96 in October 2025, had a successful career in television and stage productions, sharing the spotlight with acclaimed actors such as Judi Dench and Ian McKellen.
In his will, Woodvine allocated £850,795 to his wife, Lynn Farleigh, his children, and a hospice. The majority of the estate was designated for his wife, whom he married in 1996, while each of his children, Mary Woodvine and Emma Harter, received £100,000. Additionally, a donation of £5,000 was made to the Katherine House Hospice in Oxfordshire. The will also stipulated that any royalties earned by Woodvine during his lifetime should benefit his wife.
Drafted in 2014, the will also specified Woodvine’s desire for an eco-friendly burial in Warwickshire, where he had previously collaborated with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Woodvine’s acting journey began in 1960 on the stage, with notable roles like Harry Y. Esterbrook in Inherit The Wind at London’s St Martin’s Theatre. His career spanned various TV appearances, including roles in Coronation Street, The Crown, Shameless, and Doctor Who. He also graced the big screen, starring in films like Miss Potter alongside Renee Zellweger and Enys Men, a project he shared with his daughter, Mary.
Following his passing, his agent Phil Belfield released a statement praising Woodvine’s remarkable talent and extensive contributions to the industry. The Royal Shakespeare Company also paid tribute to the Olivier Award-winning actor, hailing him as a consummate Shakespearean and a beloved member of the company.
