Vernon Kay, the host of BBC Radio 2, interrupted his live broadcast on Tuesday morning to share heartbreaking news. After playing a song, the 51-year-old disclosed the sudden passing of Ian Deeley, the studio manager at the station, who tragically died at the age of 45.
Starting with a somber tone, he remarked, “At Radio 2, it’s not just the on-air personalities featured in the Radio Times who contribute. We, including myself and all other presenters, play a small role while the extensive team behind Radio 2 truly drives its success.”
Expressing the BBC family’s profound sorrow, Vernon conveyed, “Our outstanding studio manager, Ian Deeley, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at 45. Ian was fundamentally a radio enthusiast, whether operating the console, managing outside broadcasts, producing, or hosting – his passion for radio was unwavering.”
Highlighting Ian’s extensive tenure, Vernon reflected, “Despite his youth, Ian had a distinguished career, having worked across various BBC radio stations.” He continued, “Ian initially covered news shifts, moved on to production roles, and lately collaborated with the outside broadcast team, affectionately dubbed ‘the broadside outcasts.'”
Recalling significant projects, Vernon mentioned, “Ian contributed to major radio events with the OB team, such as music festivals, BBC Proms, and royal occasions.” Notably, he emphasized Ian’s pivotal role in ensuring the seamless execution of the D-Day celebrations in Normandy, underscoring Ian’s meticulous dedication.
In addition to his broadcasting endeavors, Vernon shared Ian’s deep passion for sailing, noting his leadership role at the local sailing club. Describing Ian as an exuberant and charismatic individual, Vernon added that his vibrant personality and quick wit will be dearly missed by the team.
Ending on a heartfelt note, Vernon extended condolences to Ian’s family, including his mother, brother, and partner.
