BBC’s Naga Munchetty Defends Decision to Remain Childless

Published on

Naga Munchetty has shared her experience of facing harsh criticism for her decision not to have children. Known for her work on BBC Breakfast and Radio 5 Live, Naga has been with the BBC since 2008 and resides in Hertfordshire with her husband, James Haggar, whom she married in 2007.

Having previously discussed her and James’ choice to remain childless, Naga explained that they valued their current lifestyle and wanted to pursue it further. In 2019, at the age of forty, Naga underwent a procedure to block her fallopian tubes, a decision that initially upset her mother.

However, in a recent interview with journalist Ateh Jewel, Naga revealed that her mother now understands and supports her decision. Despite her mother’s acceptance, Naga has faced judgment from others who criticized her for denying her mother the opportunity to have grandchildren.

Speaking to The Times, Naga addressed the criticism she received, emphasizing that the decision was mutual between her and her husband. Reflecting on her mother’s evolving perspective, Naga highlighted the importance of her mother’s acceptance of her happiness and success.

Before opting for surgery, Naga tried a contraceptive coil but experienced discomfort, leading her to remove it after a year. She expressed her aversion to hormonal birth control methods and the lifelong commitment and expenses associated with parenthood.

In an interview with Saga Magazine, Naga reiterated her stance on parenthood, citing the challenges and commitments involved. Despite some negative reactions, Naga’s mother eventually expressed pride in her daughter’s accomplishments and happiness, illustrating her support for Naga’s choices.

Additionally, James has built a successful career in television production, directing, and consulting for programs like Sky News’ panel show The Pledge. The couple, who had their first date at a pool club, exchanged vows in 2007. Recalling a mishap during their wedding reception, Naga humorously shared how she stumbled during their first dance.

The couple’s journey and Naga’s candid discussions about her decision not to have children highlight the complexities and personal nature of such choices in today’s society.
