A prominent figure from the BBC has passed away, prompting a heartfelt tribute from his colleague and friend. Phil Taylor, a longtime radio presenter on BBC Radio Jersey for 35 years until his retirement 18 months ago, has left a lasting impact on his audience.

Taylor was renowned for hosting the popular Sunday show, By Special Request, and also had a presence on the Saturday morning show and special holiday broadcasts that were well-received by viewers. In addition to his on-air work, he contributed behind the scenes as a technical operator for various programs, including Royal Outside Broadcasts, Liberation Day, Election nights, and the Saturday Sports Show.

Matthew Price, the executive producer at BBC Radio Jersey, who collaborated with Taylor for a quarter of a century, fondly recalled Taylor’s ability to connect with listeners, stating, “Phil developed a wonderfully warm relationship with listeners.” His funeral is scheduled for Friday in St Helier.

Describing Taylor’s radio career, Price mentioned Taylor’s transition from hosting By Special Request on Sunday afternoons to becoming synonymous with Sunday Afternoons, where he played music requested by the audience across various genres. The BBC acknowledged Taylor’s dedication to broadcasting and his impact on listeners, noting his record-breaking audience numbers during his tenure.

Following changes in programming priorities post-Covid, Taylor shifted his focus to the technical aspects of radio production, collaborating with the Saturday sports team. He also shared his expertise by training radio reporters and presenters based on his extensive experience in the industry.

Reflecting on Taylor’s retirement, Price highlighted Taylor’s warmth and humility in bidding farewell to his listeners and expressed gratitude for their support. In a post upon his retirement in July 2024, Taylor thanked his audience for the privilege of being part of their lives, emphasizing the importance of kindness, tolerance, understanding, and acceptance.
