Renowned wildlife presenter and humorist Bill Oddie has passed away at the age of 85, as confirmed by his agent who praised Oddie as Britain’s beloved birder known for his intelligence and humor.

While gaining fame in the 1970s as part of the comedy group The Goodies with Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden, Oddie was celebrated for his work as a naturalist, conservationist, and TV host focusing on wildlife topics.

In a heartfelt statement, Oddie’s friend and agent, David Foster, expressed deep sorrow over Oddie’s demise, highlighting his diverse talents as a wildlife presenter, broadcaster, comedian, writer, musician, and conservation advocate. Foster emphasized Oddie’s dedication to environmental protection rather than seeking fame.

Oddie’s impactful legacy includes inspiring people of all backgrounds and ages to appreciate and safeguard the environment through his activism, campaigns, and leadership in conservation efforts that will be long remembered.

Survived by his wife Laura and daughters Bonnie, Kate, and Rosie, Oddie’s television career transitioned from comedy to wildlife documentaries, fronting popular BBC series like Birding with Bill Oddie and Bill Oddie Goes Wild. His tenure on Springwatch ended controversially in 2008, with Oddie openly criticizing the BBC for his dismissal.

Struggling with mental health challenges, Oddie revealed his bipolar diagnosis in 2010, attributing his abrupt departure from Springwatch to his condition. The aftermath of his dismissal led to severe mental health setbacks, including hospitalization for clinical depression.

Following his exit from Springwatch, Oddie was succeeded by Chris Packham, who now hosts both Autumnwatch and Springwatch. Despite maintaining a low profile in recent years, Oddie candidly shared his health struggles with fans in 2020, revealing a near-fatal episode of lithium toxicity that profoundly affected his well-being.

Recognized as an avid birdwatcher since his youth in Birmingham, Oddie’s contributions extended beyond entertainment, serving on various wildlife conservation councils and organizations. His comic roots in Cambridge Footlights paved the way for a successful career in writing and performing, including chart-topping hits like The Funky Gibbon with The Goodies.
