An acclaimed B&B and café has shut down in a significant setback for the community, with the owner attributing the closure to the challenging location that led to a lack of foot traffic.
The Dove Inn, a gluten-free café and B&B located in Alburgh, Norfolk, ceased operations on Friday after a successful two and a half years of catering to what owner Sonya Resemblance described as a clientele of “beautiful people.”
This closure is part of a broader trend affecting the pub and hospitality industry in Britain, where numerous establishments are facing closures due to escalating costs and evolving consumer behaviors causing disruptions within the sector.
In a recent example, the beloved White Horse on London End in Beaconsfield permanently shut its doors earlier this month, underscoring the challenges faced by pub owners. Industry experts had previously warned about the potential decline of the pub sector, citing substantial cost increases that led to the closure of 300 pubs in the first quarter of 2025 alone.
Despite being recognized as one of the top 50 cafés in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before its closure, The Dove Inn succumbed to the pressures of the industry. Under Sonya Resemblance’s management since July 2023, the inn offered a range of meals including brunch, lunch, and popular Sunday roasts, contributing to the local economy by creating jobs, providing training opportunities, and hosting events focused on enhancing mental well-being.
The business had also received accolades, winning two Norfolk prizes at Luxlife Magazine’s Food and Drink Awards, including titles like Emerging Hospitality Business of the Year and B&B and Pub of the Year.
A distinctive feature of the inn was its completely gluten-free menu, a point of pride for Sonya, who aimed to offer safe dining options for individuals facing dietary challenges when eating out.
Expressing gratitude to loyal patrons upon announcing the closure, Sonya highlighted the positive impact of the business in creating employment opportunities and social spaces that were crucial for mental health support. Despite efforts from dedicated customers to prevent the closure, Sonya confirmed the unfortunate news on Friday, January 16, receiving an outpouring of supportive messages from the community.
One customer expressed sadness over the closure, appreciating the establishment for providing a welcoming environment and exceptional food, expressing hope for a potential return in the future.
