“Bezos Earth Fund and DiCaprio Launch $200M Species Recovery Project”

Published on

A fresh initiative worth $200 million from the Bezos Earth Fund and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Re:wild aims to aid in the recovery of 100 endangered species such as pink iguanas, lemurs, wild pigs, and pangolins. The Phoenix Species Project is set to provide ongoing financial backing for breeding programs, habitat restoration, and grassroots conservation efforts. This initiative also calls into question whether billionaire-funded philanthropy can positively impact the environment and enhance donors’ eco-friendly image, despite the environmental controversies surrounding the businesses that generated their wealth.

As governments scale back their commitments to climate and biodiversity, private funders are stepping in to fill the void. The Bezos Earth Fund has allocated $100 million to the project, with Re:wild and other partners contributing the remaining funds. Founded by Jeff Bezos, the Bezos Earth Fund’s association with Amazon has drawn criticism for issues like plastic pollution, deforestation, and excessive water usage by its data centers.

Wren Montgomery, a researcher at the Greenwash Action Lab and a sustainability professor, defines greenwashing as portraying an overly positive image of an organization’s environmental practices. Montgomery expressed concerns about selective disclosure in the project, where positive efforts may overshadow harmful activities conducted elsewhere. Despite potential credibility in their conservation work, if negative actions are concealed, it could still be considered greenwashing.

The Bezos Earth Fund declined to address questions regarding greenwashing but emphasized its commitment to species recovery based on readiness from local partners. The initiative forms part of the fund’s $10 billion pledge toward climate and biodiversity challenges, with progress reports available through an online dashboard.

Entrepreneur Dax Dasilva, who founded the environmental non-profit Age of Union with a $40 million investment, partners with Re:wild to protect ecosystems and species. Dasilva highlighted the transformative impact of the Phoenix funding on conservation efforts, emphasizing the importance of continuing conservation work amidst global biodiversity threats.

Although not directly involved, Chris Johnson, a professor specializing in large terrestrial mammal conservation, hopes the project will draw attention to the global biodiversity crisis. While the project’s focus on 100 species is just a fraction of those at risk, it includes a diverse range beyond the usual charismatic animals. Private funding can swiftly support overlooked local initiatives, but it cannot replace essential environmental regulations, sustained public funding, or corporate responsibility.

Critics caution against viewing philanthropic initiatives as distractions from companies’ environmental impacts, particularly in sectors like data centers. Despite potential debates over donors’ motivations, the project’s success can be measured by species recovery, habitat restoration, and long-term support for local conservation groups.
