A refugee with severe visual impairment, abandoned by border patrol agents, has tragically been discovered deceased in New York. Nurul Amin Shah Alam, aged 56, described as “vulnerable,” was reportedly left alone at a café in New York, prompting an investigation into the conduct of the US officials involved, deemed “unprofessional and inhumane” by Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan.
The individual, a father of two, was reportedly dropped off on February 19 by Border Patrol officers following his release from Erie County jail. His body was located around four miles from the coffee shop on Tuesday evening, with an autopsy attributing his death to health-related issues.
Homicide detectives are now scrutinizing the events leading up to Mr. Shah Alam’s passing after his release from custody, as conveyed by the police department. Originally from Myanmar, he had faced assault charges on February 15, 2025, subsequently pleading guilty to lesser offenses before a scheduled sentencing hearing on March 24.
According to reports, Mr. Shah Alam, who had limited English proficiency, was found using a curtain rod as a makeshift walking aid when he was encountered by authorities. The circumstances surrounding his release from Erie County custody and subsequent events are currently under investigation.
