An inquiry has been initiated following an incident where a Boeing 767 aircraft struck a street light while landing at a bustling airport in the United States. The United Airlines flight hit the light pole on the New Jersey Turnpike during its final approach to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
Federal authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), are investigating the event that occurred just before the plane from Italy touched down. Spectators captured the moment on video, showing shocked reactions as the plane made contact with the street light.
Despite the collision, United Flight 169, a Boeing 767-400 arriving from Venice, safely landed around 2 p.m. local time with no injuries reported among the 221 passengers and 10 crew members on board.
The aircraft, with registration N77066, was descending towards Newark airport when it clipped the street light adjacent to the heavily trafficked New Jersey Turnpike. This incident has raised concerns about the aircraft’s altitude during its final descent.
The NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are swiftly working to determine the cause of the low-altitude contact. An NTSB lead investigator is scheduled to arrive at Newark for further investigation, while United Airlines has been instructed to secure the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) for immediate analysis.
A preliminary report outlining the details of the incident is anticipated to be released within the next 30 days. United Airlines released a statement acknowledging the contact with the light pole during the final approach, ensuring that the aircraft landed safely and that an investigation into the incident is underway.
