An 11-year-old boy had to undergo emergency surgery resulting in the amputation of his left leg after a shark attack off the coast of Jaboatao dos Guararapes near Recife, Brazil. The uncle of the boy, Aldemir Jose, recounted the harrowing experience of the attack, explaining that he rushed into the water upon hearing cries for help and found his nephew injured but conscious, pleading not to let him die.

Following the attack, a nurse provided immediate care to the boy until emergency responders arrived and transported him to a nearby hospital. Reports indicated that the shark had bitten the child on the left hand and hip, leading to the amputation of his leg. The incident occurred around 1:30 pm local time at Piedade Beach, a location known for shark sightings, as indicated by warning signs posted in the area.

Danise Alves, the executive secretary of the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents (CEMIT), highlighted the specific areas where swimming bans are in effect due to the risk of shark attacks. This recent incident marks the third shark attack in Pernambuco state this year, with Recife and Jaboatao dos Guararapes being part of the affected region. Over the past 34 years, there have been a total of 83 recorded shark attacks in the state, resulting in 27 fatalities.
