A British Army member has tragically passed away in a training mishap in northern Iraq. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed the incident occurred on May 30 and has respectfully notified the individual’s family. The MoD has urged for a period of privacy before disclosing further details.

Expressing condolences, the MoD stated, “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends during this difficult time.” Defense Secretary John Healey informed the House of Commons about the fatality on Monday, conveying solidarity with the family and unit affected by the sorrowful event.

Despite the loss, some British personnel continue to serve in Iraq as part of Operation Shader, the UK’s effort in the international coalition combatting the resurgence of the Islamic State group in the region. This tragedy follows the death of Captain Philip Gilbert Muldowney, 25, in January due to an incident at the Otterburn Training Area in Northumberland, a prominent army training ground in the UK.

Captain Muldowney, originally from Co Roscommon, was part of the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery as a fire support commander within 129 (Dragon) Battery. Joining the British Army in January 2020, he received his commission into the Royal Artillery in December 2020 after completing training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

An inquest disclosed that Captain Muldowney sustained a gunshot wound, believed to have entered through his back and exited through his left shoulder. The inquiry was adjourned pending further investigation by Northumbria Police, the Health and Safety Executive, and the Defence Safety Authority.

In the aftermath of his passing, the MoD praised Captain Muldowney as an “immensely enthusiastic officer who brought inspiration to those around him through his vibrant approach to life.”
