“British Citizens Repatriated from Hantavirus-Hit Cruise Ship”

Published on

A group of British individuals is being repatriated from the MV Hondius cruise ship, which has been affected by a hantavirus outbreak. The British passengers and crew, totaling 22 individuals, are expected to arrive in Tenerife on Sunday before being flown back to the UK.

Upon the ship’s arrival in the Canary Islands, officials from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and Foreign Office will conduct hantavirus testing on the Britons. Those who test negative and show no symptoms will be immediately transferred to a dedicated repatriation flight equipped with medical professionals and necessary supplies.

The MV Hondius, en route from the coast off Cape Verde, is scheduled to dock in Tenerife, pending favorable weather conditions. Most returning Britons are advised to self-isolate at home, with alternative accommodations arranged by UKHSA if needed.

Notably, two British men are receiving treatment for hantavirus in the Netherlands and Johannesburg, while a third individual is under care on Tristan da Cunha. The Foreign Office has confirmed that out of the 30 British passengers and crew on board, 22 are still present on the ship.

Efforts are underway to trace and notify individuals who have had contact with the British nationals who disembarked at various locations. The UKHSA is closely monitoring the situation and providing support to the Britons on board, who currently show no hantavirus symptoms.

In collaboration with health experts, UKHSA is investigating the virus transmission patterns and assessing the current strain’s transmissibility. While there have been nine confirmed hantavirus cases linked to the cruise ship, precautions are being taken to prevent further spread.

The UKHSA, Foreign Office, and NHS are coordinating the repatriation process and ensuring strict infection control measures are in place for the returning Britons. Continuous monitoring and follow-up are planned to safeguard the health of all individuals involved.

As the situation evolves, health authorities are vigilant and prepared to address any emerging cases or symptoms among the passengers. The repatriation and isolation measures are viewed as essential steps to safeguard public health and mitigate potential risks associated with the outbreak.
