British Couple Detained in Iran Yearn for Home

Published on

Lindsay Foreman, currently imprisoned in Iran alongside her husband Craig Foreman, shared her heartfelt desire to return home. The British couple, residents of East Sussex, have been detained for over 14 months on espionage allegations, despite their denial, and are incarcerated in Tehran’s infamous Evin prison.

Both in their fifties, the pair were on a global motorcycle expedition when they were apprehended in January last year. They had entered Iran from Armenia on December 30 with plans to transit to Australia.

Although they were tourists with valid visas, an authorized itinerary, and a guide, they disregarded the Foreign Office’s advice against traveling to Iran. According to Lindsay’s acquaintance, Naomi Connell from The Independent, numerous individuals had entered and exited the country without issues during that period.

Reflecting on their circumstances, Lindsay stated, “We never imagined that this dream trip would result in being seized at gunpoint and confined in isolation.”

While adjusting to the challenging prison conditions, Lindsay expressed that the most distressing aspect of their detainment is being separated from their loved ones back home.

“Not being able to embrace them knowing they are out there is the toughest part. Thank you for remembering us,” she remarked. “I am eagerly looking forward to returning home.”

In a recent statement, the couple’s family expressed grave concerns about their well-being, especially after explosions near Evin prison amid escalating regional tensions.

Following conversations with Lindsay and Craig, their relatives reported that they had heard numerous nearby explosions, some strong enough to cause damage to parts of the facility.

Worries escalated when guards purportedly deserted the prison out of fear of being targeted in a potential US strike.

Their son, Joe Bennett, informed Reuters that his parents are enduring constant drone activity overhead and harsh living conditions, including sharing space with pests, sleeping on unfurnished metal bunks, and enduring chronic physical discomfort.

Joe urged UK and US authorities to prioritize efforts to secure the release of foreign nationals.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper previously condemned the couple’s conviction as “completely unjustified” and vowed relentless pursuit until their safe repatriation.

Speaking recently, Joe criticized Yvette for offering only “prolonged uncertainty” during a meeting with her.

A foreign ministry spokesperson affirmed in an email that the welfare of detained British nationals in Iran remains a top priority, especially during the ongoing Middle East crisis.
