British Couple Detained in Iran’s Evin Prison Speak Out

Published on

A British couple detained in a notorious Iranian prison has spoken out about their harrowing experience, describing their situation as a nightmare. Lindsay and Craig Foreman, both 53 and from East Sussex, have been imprisoned in Tehran’s Evin Prison for 15 months out of a 10-year sentence for espionage following a trial they deemed unfair.

The couple’s ordeal began in January 2025 when they were arrested during a world motorcycle trip that turned into a nightmare. With no contact for months, their children mounted a vigorous campaign for their release. Lindsay, a psychologist, and Craig, a carpenter, opened up about the grim conditions in prison during a recent interview. Lindsay shared that her daily walks in the prison yard help maintain her sanity, despite the language barrier and overwhelming moments.

Craig, detained separately from Lindsay, provides support from his wing, reassuring her of their eventual freedom. Their plight worsened as Craig’s untreated tooth abscess led to urgent medical requirements. The prison environment, marred by violence and executions, has taken a toll on the couple. Craig witnessed the tragic fate of his cellmates and endured extensive interrogations under harsh conditions.

Human rights groups have condemned Iran’s increased use of the death penalty as a political tool, leading to numerous executions, some shrouded in secrecy. The psychological torture inflicted on inmates serves as a means of control and power projection, according to experts. The UK government has denounced the couple’s unjust imprisonment and continues efforts for their safe return.

Former prisoner Anoosheh Ashoori recounted the dire conditions inside Evin Prison, highlighting issues of overcrowding, inadequate food, and poor sanitation. He described an oppressive atmosphere that fueled tension among inmates, causing psychological distress. The lack of communication during interrogations further compounded the psychological burden on detainees.

Lindsay’s son, Joe Bennett, has devoted himself to advocating for his parents’ release, navigating the complexities of international relations and the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran. Despite the challenges, the family remains resolute in their pursuit of justice and reunion. The UK government’s diplomatic efforts aim to secure the couple’s return home safely.
