Despite facing threats from Iranian drones and missiles launched in response to US and Israeli actions, many residents in Dubai appear composed. Poppy Owen, an expat living in the Damac Hills area near Minhad Airbase, experienced intense fear and anxiety during the recent attacks. She expressed concern about the proximity of the explosions and debris falling from the sky onto buildings.

Poppy, originally from North Wales, expressed confidence in Dubai’s robust missile defense systems, with a significant portion of defensive measures originating from Minhad Airbase. She highlighted the dangers posed by falling debris rather than the explosions themselves, recalling instances where she had to protect her young children from potential harm in the bathroom. To reassure her daughters, she explained the loud noises as part of a fireworks display.

Despite the ongoing attacks, Dubai’s defenses have largely been successful in intercepting incoming threats. However, notable structures like the Fairmont The Palm hotel and the Burj Al Arab have reportedly sustained damage. The city’s carefully crafted image of security and safety has taken a hit, as noted by Yasser Elsheshtawy, a former Dubai resident and architecture professor at Columbia University.

Poppy described living conditions akin to a Covid-19 lockdown, staying indoors as advised by the government and hearing the constant sound of missiles being launched. While considering the option of leaving the country, she and her family have opted to stay for the time being, focusing on staying indoors and riding out the situation with essential supplies.

Information has been scarce beyond official announcements, leaving residents like Poppy reliant on government updates and the sound of defensive missile launches. Despite the challenges, she emphasized the importance of staying indoors and remaining safe during these uncertain times.
