This woman, who had only interacted with the man through a glass screen and never had physical contact, is a British law school graduate named Tiana Krasniqi, aged 31. She stood close to the chamber window as James Broadnax, aged 37, received a lethal injection at 6:47 pm in a Texas prison. The couple tied the knot just two weeks prior in a brief 20-minute ceremony at the Allan B. Polunsky Unit after Tiana initially reached out to the inmate for academic purposes.
Despite her efforts to spare his life following his conviction for the 2008 shootings of two Christian music producers, Tiana was left heartbroken as she witnessed Broadnax’s execution. She had to be assisted out of the prison as she emotionally broke down during the tragic event. Before the execution, Broadnax’s legal team released a statement expressing gratitude for the support and efforts made to seek justice in his case. Tiana, a resident of Lewisham, London, initially contacted Broadnax for academic reasons as she was pursuing a master’s degree in international human rights law at the University of Law.
Their communication started as part of Tiana’s dissertation focusing on racial inequalities in US capital punishment but evolved into a romantic bond within a few months. Tiana described Broadnax as intelligent, well-spoken, respectful, and possessing a moral compass despite his circumstances on death row. Although they only conversed through a screen, Tiana found solace in possessing a few clothing items that Broadnax had given her, such as his worn T-shirts.
Broadnax, accused of fatally shooting and robbing Stephen Swan and Matthew Butler almost 18 years ago in a recording studio parking lot in Dallas, Garland, had his cousin, Demarius Cummings, claim responsibility for the crime in a last-minute video plea to halt the execution. Broadnax’s legal team argued that forensic evidence supported Cummings’ confession, as Cummings’ DNA was found on the murder weapon and in the victim’s pocket, not Broadnax’s.
