A British man described as “beautiful, strong, and incredibly brave” met his end while backing Ukraine forces in combat. Ayrton Redfearn, aged 23 and hailing from south Devon, lost his life in the Donetsk region on May 9. He had joined a specialized unit aiding the Ukrainian army in 2025, as confirmed by his mother, Natasha.
Natasha expressed deep sorrow, stating, “My beautiful, strong, and incredibly brave son was killed,” adding that she had long feared receiving such tragic news. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office announced their assistance to the bereaved British national’s family and ongoing communication with Ukrainian authorities.
Despite the heartache, Natasha emphasized their endeavor to embody even a fraction of Ayrton’s strength, bravery, and courage to cope with life without him. Grateful for the outpouring of tributes and support, she highlighted Ayrton’s impending bravery award, originally scheduled posthumously. A former student of Churston Ferrers Grammar School, Ayrton’s early fascination with the military led to his enrollment in the RAF at 17 before venturing abroad.
Dr. Ben King, Ayrton’s tutor, lauded his intelligence and admired personality, stating he made an immediate impact at school. Ayrton’s untimely demise left the educational community in shock, with many expressing condolences and recounting fond memories of his time there.
Former instructors praised Ayrton’s character and humor, expressing condolences to his family and a desire to pay respects at his funeral. The loss of such a vibrant individual deeply affected those who knew him, leaving a void that resonated throughout his community.
