The family of a British man who fell from a three-story balcony during a stag do in Portugal is concerned that his travel insurance may not cover his increasing medical expenses due to his alcohol consumption.
Jakob Davies, 25, is currently hospitalized in Faro after sustaining severe injuries in a fall at a hotel in Albufeira earlier this month. Despite having travel insurance, there is uncertainty surrounding whether his insurer will provide coverage as alcohol was detected in his system.
Hailing from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, Jakob had traveled to the Portuguese party destination with approximately 30 colleagues for a stag weekend on June 4.
His mother, Claire Gerrard, is worried about the potential financial burden on the family after doctors indicated that Jakob may require urgent surgery to avoid permanent disability.
While Jakob had opted to stay back at the accommodation to play football on June 5, the rest of the stag group returned later to a chaotic scene with emergency vehicles rushing to the hotel.
Details of the incident remain vague, with Jakob having no memory of the events leading up to his fall. He was found unconscious with severe head injuries and multiple fractures, believed to have fallen from a three-story height.
As Jakob undergoes treatment in Faro, his loved ones have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with medical costs and repatriation expenses.
Experts caution that certain travel insurance policies may exclude coverage for incidents related to alcohol or drug use. Travelers are advised to carefully review policy terms, especially if alcohol consumption is anticipated during their trip.
