British Tourists Arrested in Spain for Fake Kidnapping Scam

Published on

Police in a popular tourist destination have apprehended two British vacationers for orchestrating a peculiar fake kidnapping scheme to earn additional holiday funds. The duo allegedly caused authorities in Benidorm, Costa Blanca, to halt ongoing investigations and seek assistance from a specialized anti-hostage unit by sending a family member a fabricated video depicting one suspect threatening his companion with a knife while covered in blood.

Following a tip-off from UK law enforcement via Interpol, Spanish officers mobilized for an assault on the hotel identified as the supposed “kidnap” site before aborting the mission upon observing the alleged victim casually exiting the premises with his purported captor. Subsequently detained for fabricating a crime and fraud, the pair reportedly demanded a ransom of £725, leading to potential legal consequences and compensation liabilities for disrupting police operations in the resort town.

Spain’s National Police in Alicante confirmed the extensive operation triggered by the phony kidnapping attempt aimed at extorting money. The arrested British men, aged 37 and 51, were accused of simulating a kidnapping for financial gain. The investigation commenced after Interpol flagged a potential abduction of a British citizen at the resort, prompted by videos received by a relative showing the fake victim covered in blood and threatened with a knife by the alleged perpetrator.

Law enforcement efforts in Benidorm focused on locating the “kidnap location,” suspending other ongoing inquiries to prioritize resolving the situation and ensuring the safety of all involved. Subsequent developments revealed the hotel where the staged abductor and victim were identified, leading to the duo’s arrest on charges of simulating a crime and fraud. Additional investigations uncovered identity fraud, with one suspect providing false information to authorities upon arrest.

The arrested individuals may face financial obligations for the police operation expenses if found guilty. Notably, a previous incident involving a British woman orchestrating a failed robbery and kidnap near Benidorm with accomplices underscores the consequences of such criminal endeavors. Law enforcement seized various weapons and gear during the initial arrests, highlighting the seriousness of the situation and the potential risks posed by such elaborate schemes.
