A frightening incident occurred when a hot air balloon carrying British tourists crashed during a sightseeing trip over an archaeological site in Mexico. The balloon, descending from the sky, unexpectedly struck high-voltage power lines before plummeting onto a nearby football field.
While the operator of the balloon escaped unharmed, the British couple onboard sustained severe injuries. The mishap took place near Mexico City, specifically in San Lorenzo Tlamimilolpan, on a Monday morning. The tourists, residents of London, were soaring above the Teotihuacan pyramids before the sudden crash.
Eyewitnesses, including farmer Refugio Hernandez, described the balloon’s rapid descent and the ensuing chaos. The woman onboard was found injured inside the basket, with visible bruises and signs of a possible broken leg. Her partner also suffered injuries and was visibly shocked.
Local residents offered immediate assistance until paramedics arrived and transferred the couple to a nearby clinic for treatment. Authorities are currently investigating whether the crash resulted from human error or technical malfunction.
Concerned locals highlighted previous instances of hot air balloons flying perilously close to power lines in the area, urging authorities to take preventive measures. Maria de los Angeles Perez expressed fears of a potential tragedy if such incidents are not addressed promptly.
Mexico’s Federal Civil Aviation Agency confirmed the incident involving the hot-air balloon and announced an administrative investigation. The agency stated that the aircraft, registered as XA-OZY and operated by Happy Puerto, came into contact with power lines, resulting in burns from an electric shock to the passengers. The injured individuals were promptly transferred to Mexico City for further medical care.
