“Brothers on Trial for Fatal Crash Killing Father”

Published on

Two siblings are facing charges for their involvement in a fatal collision that resulted in the death of a father and severe injuries to his nine-year-old son. The jury was informed that the brothers, Abubakr Yusaf, a 31-year-old locum optometrist, and Umar Yusaf, a 35-year-old resident of Esmond Road in Manchester, are accused of causing the death of Rhys Jenkins, a 41-year-old rugby referee from Deuddw, Powys, through dangerous driving on the A483 in November 2024.

The defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges of causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving. Additionally, Abubakr denies causing death while being uninsured. The court heard that the tragic incident took place on the A483 south of Welshpool when the brothers were driving a BMW and Audi between 6pm and 6:30pm on November 16, 2024.

According to the prosecutor, David Mainstone, Abubakr’s excessive speed and reckless overtaking maneuvers led to the loss of control of the BMW, resulting in a collision with Mr. Jenkins’ vehicle. Witnesses testified that the brothers were racing each other, with one witness describing the driving as “unbelievably reckless and dangerous.”

The court also heard that after the collision, the brothers allegedly fled the scene, leaving the damaged vehicles behind. The prosecution claimed that the BMW had been traveling at a speed exceeding 63mph when the impact occurred, causing the fatal collision.

Mr. Jenkins tragically lost his life in the crash, while his son was airlifted to Alder Hey children’s hospital in Liverpool for treatment. The trial is ongoing as the prosecution argues that both defendants bear responsibility for the fatal outcome of the collision.
