“Buffalo Couple Welcomes Rare Quintuplets at Local Hospital”

Published on

Quintuplet pregnancies are extremely uncommon, with only about 1 in 55 million cases. Jessica and John Lottbrein from Buffalo, New York, faced this rare and high-risk situation. Jessica expressed initial panic upon learning about the pregnancy, but John remained calm and assured her they would figure things out. The birth of the quintuplets at Golisano Children’s Hospital marked only the second such occurrence in Buffalo’s history.

Valerie Elberson, the associate medical director of the NICU, emphasized the rarity of the situation, noting that globally, such births occur approximately once a year at a rate of one in 15. In Buffalo, this was only the second reported case.

To address the challenges associated with quintuplet pregnancies, healthcare teams from the Maternal Fetal Medicine Center and Golisano Children’s Hospital collaborated early on to prepare for potential complications. Doctors advised Jessica to maintain a sense of normalcy in her daily life to best prepare for the birth. When Jessica went into labor in mid-December, a team of medical professionals was ready to assist with the delivery.

The quintuplets, named Holly, Mason, Stefan, Connor, and Layla, were born at 28 weeks and five days, weighing under 3 pounds each. They were immediately transferred to the NICU, where they have been thriving together. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for the family, raising over $9,000 towards their $11,000 goal.

Jessica expressed a sense of fate in becoming the parents of five babies and highlighted that the pregnancy was not a result of IVF or intentional efforts to have multiples. Medical staff confirmed the babies’ good health and anticipated their graduation from the NICU in the coming weeks.
