Amid soaring temperatures in deserts, the relentless heatwave is proving fatal for resilient camels known for thriving in harsh conditions. With thermometers surpassing 50 degrees in Africa and the Middle East, experts are witnessing distressing impacts on these vital animals. Camels, traditionally valued for their endurance in hot climates, are now succumbing to dehydration, exhaustion, and diseases due to the unprecedented heatwave sweeping through the regions.
In regions like northern Africa and the Horn of Africa, farmers heavily rely on camels for transporting goods across arid terrains. These animals, favored for their heat resistance and adaptability to droughts, have replaced cattle in these regions. However, the extreme heat is taking a toll on them, as observed by camel herder Ali Umer in northeastern Ethiopia. Umer shared the distressing sight of his camels suffering from blisters, watery eyes, and skin burns due to the scorching sand and intense heat.
Although camels are naturally equipped to endure temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius and regulate their body heat to some extent, the recent spike beyond their comfort zone has been alarming. Their unique coat helps shield them from excessive sunlight, and their ability to minimize sweating has been crucial for their survival in challenging environments.
According to UN Food and Agriculture scientist Dr. Mohammed Bengoumi, the relentless rise in temperatures, especially exceeding 50 degrees Celsius in many Sahara regions, poses significant heat stress risks for camels. Consequently, many camel herders in Ethiopia are relocating their herds to more hospitable regions with better access to water and vegetation. This shift may become a permanent adaptation for herders grappling with prolonged droughts and extreme heat conditions.
