In a cavernous space once occupied by a shuttered Campbell Soup factory in Toronto’s western district, the Canadian Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation unveiled the government’s most substantial investment in domestic technology yet. Amidst the backdrop of Canada-U.S. trade tensions and President Donald Trump’s assertions, Evan Solomon emphasized national pride while announcing $195 million in repayable federal support for Xanadu Quantum Technologies, a Toronto-based company.

“This marks a momentous occasion for Canada, Xanadu, and global science,” Solomon declared on Friday. “It epitomizes Canadian excellence: our ability to innovate.”

Established in 2016, Xanadu specializes in developing software and quantum computers that operate using light rather than electricity. Unlike traditional computers that generate heat due to electrical conductivity, Xanadu’s quantum chips manipulate light particles without encountering electrical resistance.

“Our nation is ready to take bold strides in this pursuit,” Solomon affirmed. “We are committed to tackling the world’s most significant challenges and leading on a global scale.”

Xanadu’s recent breakthrough unveiled a chip capable of producing error-resistant photonic qubits, the fundamental building blocks of quantum computing. Solomon highlighted the strategic importance of advancing quantum technology, stressing its critical role in national security.

During the announcement held at the former Campbell’s Soup facility in Toronto, Xanadu outlined plans to establish advanced manufacturing capabilities for fault-tolerant photonic quantum computers. The company’s ambitious project aims to transform the 158,000-square-foot site into a cutting-edge manufacturing hub, with an estimated cost of $893 million and the potential to employ 275 individuals.

Comparing traditional computing to horseback riding and quantum computing to rocket travel, Solomon emphasized the rapid advancements quantum technology offers. The substantial $195 million federal funding commitment signifies a significant step in the government’s broader National Quantum Strategy launched in 2023.

Xanadu’s CEO, Christian Weedbrook, highlighted the importance of government support in enhancing the company’s operations within Canada. The ongoing negotiations with the Ontario government could potentially secure additional funding to bolster Xanadu’s manufacturing capabilities in the country.
