“Canada’s Flag Football Teams Advance to Quarterfinals”

Published on

Canada’s male and female teams have progressed to the quarterfinals of the flag football world championships held in Germany. The men’s team, despite losing 37-28 to Japan, secured the second spot in their group with a 2-1 record. Following Nigeria’s withdrawal from the tournament due to visa issues, Canada was granted an automatic win. Japan’s quarterback, Take Taniguchi, delivered five touchdown passes, while Canada’s Michael O’Connor, a former CFL quarterback, threw three TD passes. In the upcoming quarterfinals, Canada will face American Samoa, who caused an upset by defeating the top-ranked U.S. team.

On the other hand, the women’s team clinched the top spot in their group with a flawless 3-0 record after defeating Japan 34-20. They are set to play against Austria in the quarterfinals, with a potential victory paving their way to a semifinal encounter against the winner of Mexico and Spain. Quarterback Sara Parker led the charge against Japan with four touchdown passes, including two to Caroline Moquin-Joubert. Alexane Fournier and Marianne Quirion also contributed with TD receptions, while Frederique Morneau added a rushing touchdown in a remarkable comeback where Canada overcame a 20-13 halftime deficit with 21 unanswered points in the second half.

Apart from vying for the world title, teams are also eyeing a chance to secure spots in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, as the top-two finishers at the world championships will earn Olympic berths in the sport’s debut on the program. All matches from the event will be available for live streaming on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem platforms.
