Canada’s national women’s flag football team secured the world championship title by defeating the United States at the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world championships held in Düsseldorf, Germany. The men’s team also secured a spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The women’s team, having previously won against Mexico in the semifinals, sealed their victory with a 27-20 triumph over the American team in the final match.
Frederique Morneau made significant contributions with three touchdown catches for Canada, while quarterback Sara Parker connected with Caroline Moquin-Joubert for another crucial score. Parker, who completed a total of 23 touchdown passes, was recognized as the most valuable player of the women’s tournament.
On the other hand, the Canadian men’s team earned their spot at the upcoming Olympics by defeating Mexico 34-26 in the third-place playoff. Quarterback Michael O’Connor led the team with an impressive performance, amassing 294 yards and five touchdowns. Former NFL tight-end Antony Auclair played a pivotal role with 149 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions from O’Connor. Additionally, Daniel Petermann scored twice, and James Drysdale added another touchdown to secure the win.
Both the women’s and men’s teams will represent Canada at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, after the top two teams from each flag football event, excluding the host country, secured their places. Despite a loss to Italy in the men’s semifinals, Canada’s men capitalized on the opportunity by claiming victory in the third-place playoff against Mexico, thereby clinching their Olympic qualification.
Head coach Paul LaPolice expressed his pride in the team’s accomplishments, emphasizing the hard work and dedication that led to their success. He highlighted the significance of both the men’s and women’s teams qualifying for the Olympics, signaling a promising future for Canadian flag football. In the men’s final, the United States emerged victorious with a 42-26 win over Italy, showcasing the competitive nature of the tournament.
