A young backpacker, Piper James, aged 19 and hailing from Canada, was tragically discovered deceased on K’gari Island in Queensland, Australia. Before commencing her global backpacking journey, Piper defiantly told her father in Canada, “I’m 18, and you can’t stop me!”

Piper’s lifeless body was found surrounded by a group of dingoes on a beach close to her campsite, prompting an investigation into the circumstances of her death. Eight out of the ten dingoes present near Piper were euthanized. Following an inquest, it was determined that Piper died from drowning after a dingo attack, as confirmed by the Coroners Court of Queensland.

The official statement from the court mentioned that Piper succumbed to drowning amidst multiple injuries sustained during the dingo incident. The inquiry into her death is ongoing, with no additional details available at this time. Piper’s father, Todd James, expressed profound sorrow at her passing, reminiscing about her infectious laughter and compassionate nature.

Angela James, Piper’s mother, shared that her daughter was thoroughly enjoying her adventurous journey. Angela fondly recalled Piper’s love for activities like motocross, camping, swimming, and surfing. The Department of Environment, Tourism, Science, and Innovation (DETSI) in the state emphasized the importance of being dingo-safe on K’gari Island for personal safety.

DETSI warned that dingoes are apex predators in the island’s ecosystem and must be approached with caution and respect, as they are not domestic pets and do not respond to human commands.
