Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting performances at the Pan Pacific championships in Irvine, Calif. Ruck secured a silver in the women’s 100m butterfly and later claimed bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, bringing her total medal count to five. Meanwhile, McIntosh expressed disappointment after winning the B final of the women’s 400m freestyle event but failing to qualify for the A final due to a misjudgment during the morning heats.
Ruck, hailing from Kelowna, B.C., achieved a personal best time of 56.71 seconds in the 100m butterfly, earning her the silver behind American Gretchen Walsh. McIntosh, on the other hand, acknowledged her mistake and vowed to learn from it, expressing frustration over the turn of events.
In other events, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk secured silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney, from Toronto, won his first international gold in the men’s 100m backstroke earlier in the competition.
Ruck continued her successful streak by guiding Canada to a bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay, alongside teammates Mary-Sophie Harvey, Leah Tigert, and Leilani Fack. Despite McIntosh’s setback, she remains determined for future races, including the 200m IM event.
The U.S. claimed gold in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, with Australia taking silver. The Canadian men’s 4x100m freestyle team narrowly missed the podium, finishing in fourth place.
