Celebrity Chef Tom Kerridge Reflects on Childhood Near Infamous Criminals

Published on

Renowned chef Tom Kerridge recently shared insights into his upbringing in the same neighborhood as infamous British criminals Fred and Rose West. Kerridge, along with his brother Sam, grew up with both parents until their separation when he was 11.

While now residing in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, where his acclaimed pub The Hand and Flowers is situated, Kerridge’s mother and brother still reside in their hometown. Despite the distance, Kerridge visits his hometown several times a year to indulge in activities like watching rugby matches.

The notorious house at 25 Cromwell Street, known as the “house of horrors” due to the heinous crimes committed by Fred and Rose West between the 1960s and 1980s, holds a dark legacy. Kerridge reminisced about his childhood walks past the infamous residence, as his father had been a lecturer at a nearby art college.

Kerridge also disclosed that his brother attended school with Fred’s son and had always found him peculiar. Fred West died by suicide in 1995 before facing trial, while his wife was later convicted of ten murders and is currently serving a life sentence.

In addition to his childhood memories, Kerridge discussed his culinary success, notably being the first pub in the UK to receive two Michelin stars. This achievement propelled him into the limelight as a prominent figure in the culinary world, leading to the expansion of his restaurant empire.

Despite his fame, Kerridge admitted to feeling uncomfortable with public recognition, preferring privacy. He expressed his ambivalence towards fame, acknowledging its role in the hospitality industry but valuing his personal space and anonymity.

Kerridge’s journey to culinary stardom continues to be a captivating narrative, with his appearances on popular television shows like Great British Menu showcasing his talents to a wider audience. Viewers can catch Great British Menu on BBC Two tonight at 7pm.
