Two individuals have lost their lives, and 19 others have been admitted to the hospital following a chemical spill at a facility in West Virginia.
The incident occurred due to a sudden and forceful reaction of chemicals at the Catalyst Refiners plant, a business specializing in silver recovery, located in Institute. The event took place around 9:30 am local time on Wednesday, as reported by Kanawha County Commission Emergency Management Chief C.W. Sigman.
Preparations were being made to cease operations at the site through cleaning and decontamination activities when a chemical gas reaction transpired involving nitric acid and another substance. This reaction generated hydrogen sulphide, a highly toxic gas, resulting in a rapid and intense chemical response, Sigman explained.
Among the injured were seven ambulance personnel who were attending to the spill. Additional individuals were transported to medical facilities in private vehicles, with one individual even being taken in a garbage truck, Sigman disclosed.
A shelter-in-place order was issued for a one-mile radius surrounding the site as emergency responders arrived. Sigman emphasized the critical nature of commencing or concluding a chemical reaction, highlighting them as the most perilous moments.
