Dominic Watters had a memorable experience during a national food inquiry when he savored a plate of scrambled eggs at Yolk Farm near York. Expressing his satisfaction, Dominic highlighted the stark contrast between the quality of food at the farm and the limited options available in his Kent neighborhood. He emphasized the lack of access to fresh and healthy food, describing his area as a “food desert.”
Meanwhile, Lucy Antal, at Kindling Farm near Knowsley, discussed the challenges of living in a food desert, where obtaining fresh produce involves walking long distances. She emphasized the importance of easy access to nutritious food to promote public health.
As part of the Citizen Advisory Council (CAC), Dominic and others engaged with various individuals nationwide to compile a comprehensive report titled ‘From the Ground Up.’ This report advocates for a fairer and more equitable food system. The findings are supported by recent polling data from More In Common, indicating widespread public support for government intervention in ensuring access to healthy food.
The report sheds light on the deficiencies in the current food system, emphasizing the need for reforms to benefit a wide range of individuals, from single parents to healthcare professionals. It also highlights innovative projects nationwide that are addressing food access issues creatively.
Farming Minister Stephen Morgan commended the CAC’s efforts in highlighting the values necessary for a sustainable and inclusive food system. Dominic, reflecting on his experiences, emphasized the need to address disparities in food access and build a food system that caters to everyone’s needs.
