In a tragic mishap during a drug operation, a 200-pound black bear became an unintended victim of a large shipment of pure cocaine from Colombia that was meant for an airplane.
A documentary named “Cocaine Bear” airing on Channel 4 tells the real-life story of the black bear’s chaotic demise after ingesting a massive amount of cocaine. The bear’s necropsy revealed that its stomach was filled with an overwhelming quantity of cocaine, leading to its inevitable death due to various medical complications.
Referred to as Pablo EskoBear or Snow Bear, the enormous animal consumed 90 pounds of pure cocaine, and to this day, people flock to see its preserved body at a Kentucky Fun Mall.
In 1985, amid the “Bluegrass Conspiracy” era, Andrew Thornton, a former narcotics officer turned drug trafficker, parachuted out of an aircraft over the United States while transporting cocaine from Colombia. Unfortunately, Thornton got entangled in his parachute and tragically died in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Authorities investigating the incident in Chattahoochee National Forest expected to find a drug stash valued at millions of dollars but instead discovered opened containers and the deceased bear. There were no reports of aggressive behavior from the bear before its demise.
It is believed that the bear only consumed a portion of the smuggled cocaine, and the rest was left untouched. Following an examination, the bear was preserved and passed through various owners, including country singer Waylon Jennings, before being displayed at the Kentucky Fun Mall.
Despite being a notable victim, it is likely that the bear was not the only casualty of Thornton’s drug operations. Investigators found multiple bags of drugs scattered across rural Georgia and Tennessee, indicating a larger smuggling operation.
Thornton and his associates were found to have smuggled a substantial amount of cocaine into the US before his death. The documentary “Cocaine Bear” will be broadcast on Channel 4 on Saturday, January 31, at 9:30 pm.
