Community Mourns Loss in Tragic Spar Store Collision

A well-known community member tragically lost his life when a vehicle collided with a Spar store in Clonoe, located outside Coalisland, Co Tyrone. The incident occurred on a Tuesday afternoon, prompting a swift response from PSNI officers, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, and the NI Air Ambulance. Regrettably, Jock Rafferty, aged 71, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Following the heartbreaking event, heartfelt tributes flooded in for Mr. Rafferty. Local SDLP Councillor Malachy Quinn expressed the community’s profound shock at the loss, highlighting Rafferty’s significant connections with local football clubs. He conveyed his condolences, stating, “The entire community is reeling from the news. He was a well-known figure with strong ties to various football clubs. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly challenging period.”

Reflecting on the impact of the tragedy, Mid Ulster MLA Linda Dillon shared with Belfast Live her deep sorrow for the local community. She emphasized the devastating effect on the family, foreseeing profound trauma ahead. Dillon remarked on the family’s widespread popularity and respect within the community, anticipating widespread grief and heartache.

Chief Inspector Simpson, representing the Collision Investigation Unit, provided details of the incident, noting that authorities received a report around 12:20 pm regarding a vehicle crashing into a shop on Moor Road, resulting in an unfortunate collision with a member of the public. Despite swift responses from emergency services, Mr. Rafferty succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. The Moor Road section between Washingbay Road and Gortgonis Road was closed to traffic for investigation purposes.

Appealing for assistance, Chief Inspector Simpson urged any witnesses or individuals with relevant digital evidence to step forward and aid the ongoing investigation. Those with information were encouraged to contact the Collision Investigation Unit at 101, quoting reference number 651 dated 28/01/26.

In response to the emergency, a spokesperson from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service confirmed receiving a distress call at 12:16 on Wednesday, January 28th, concerning an incident in the Moor Road area of Coalisland. The NIAS promptly dispatched an Emergency Ambulance and activated the Charity Air Ambulance with HEMS support, though no patients required transportation from the scene.
