A person previously convicted of fraud allegedly transferred over two million dollars to his mother, who later made a donation to Reform UK in 2024. George Cottrell reportedly sent the significant amount to his mother Fiona Cottrell, part of which was subsequently contributed to Nigel Farage’s political party.

Cottrell, a convicted criminal, provided financial support for Nigel Farage’s security and staffing leading up to Farage’s election. Recent scrutiny has focused on the party’s financial activities, with the Metropolitan Police investigating potential circumvention of political funding regulations by donors.

Fiona Cottrell is believed to have received a deposit of 1.4 million dollars, followed by two additional payments exceeding 300,000 dollars each. She purportedly informed bankers that the funds originated from her son when questioned about the transfers.

The donations to Reform UK or Britain Means Business, made by Ms. Cottrell within 24-72 hours of receiving the money, are under scrutiny. The Metropolitan Police is reportedly examining two donations totaling £500,000 from Britain Means Business, a company linked to Reform’s Deputy Leader Richard Tice, in 2024.

According to Electoral Commission records, Britain Means Business gave two donations of £250,000 each to Reform UK within two days. Mr. Tice previously stated that the money came from Ms. Cottrell, a donor to Reform UK.

Reports suggest that Ms. Cottrell contributed £1 million to Britain Means Business in June 2024, with half of that sum directed to Reform UK. Bridget Phillipson, the Labour Party chairwoman, called on Reform UK leaders to be transparent about their financial backers, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

When questioned about the payments, Reform Treasury spokesperson Robert Jenrick affirmed that the party adhered to electoral rules. He stated that Reform had followed all guidelines during the donation period and expressed confidence in their compliance with regulations.

A spokesperson for Reform UK emphasized the party’s commitment to thorough donation vetting and compliance with Electoral Commission guidelines. The party ensures adherence to the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000 in handling all donations.
