“Cruel Husband Sentenced: 24 Years for Attempted Murder”

A man described as “cruel” and “calculating” has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for attempting to kill his estranged wife by driving at her and then viciously beating her with a baseball bat. Laurence Worville, 51, was found guilty of attempted murder by a jury at Hull Crown Court. The brutal attack occurred in Hull on May 7 last year, resulting in the victim being hospitalized for 10 days with severe injuries including a broken leg, head wound, and broken finger.

Worville, who had just been released from prison prior to the attack, located his wife by obtaining her new address through mail redirection details he acquired by trespassing at his former workplace. He had a history of violence towards her, having previously served time for assaulting her.

During the trial, Worville expressed anger towards his wife for the death of his koi carp while he was incarcerated. CCTV footage presented in court captured the horrifying moment when Worville drove his car into the woman, striking her against railings before repeatedly hitting her with a baseball bat. Passersby intervened to restrain him and assist the injured victim.

Judge John Thackray KC condemned Worville’s premeditated actions, stating that he had planned the attack meticulously and showed no remorse. The judge highlighted the heinous nature of the assault and the lack of empathy displayed by Worville throughout the ordeal.

The court heard that Worville breached a restraining order by contacting his wife, leading to the violent incident. Despite claims of mental health issues, Worville’s deliberate and violent actions were deemed unacceptable by the court.

The victim, in her impact statement, shared the lasting trauma she experienced from the attack and expressed gratitude towards those who came to her rescue. Detective Inspector Helen Collier emphasized the severity of Worville’s actions, describing him as a dangerous individual who posed a serious threat to society.

The judge commended the individuals who intervened and assisted the victim, acknowledging their bravery in preventing a potentially fatal outcome. Worville’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the consequences of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help in such situations.
