A new film adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, “Sense And Sensibility,” is set to hit UK cinemas in September 2026. This timeless story, Austen’s first published work in 1811, revolves around the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, who face challenging circumstances following their father’s passing. Amidst their grief and financial struggles, both sisters embark on captivating romantic journeys.
Daisy Edgar-Jones, known for her role in “Normal People,” will portray Elinor Dashwood, the responsible eldest sister, while Esme Creed Miles will embody Marianne, a passionate soul with a love for music and poetry. Joining them is Bodhi Rae Breathnach as their younger sister, Margaret. Catriona Balfe from “Outlander” takes on the role of their mother, with Fiona Shaw portraying Mrs. Jennings, a benefactor to the family.
In the male leads, George MacKay from “1917” will play Edward Ferrars, Frank Dillane from “Joan” will portray John Willoughby. Notably, in Emma Thompson’s award-winning 1995 adaptation, the roles were played by Hugh Grant and Dan Stevens. The film also starred the late Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon and featured Greg Wise as Willoughby, where he met his now-wife, Emma.
Similar to the bond between Lizzie and Jane in “Pride And Prejudice,” the relationship between Elinor and Marianne in “Sense And Sensibility” is highlighted as a profound sisterly love story. Despite their differences, the sisters share an unbreakable bond above all else.
As the narrative unfolds, various romantic entanglements, including the one between Elinor and Edward, face obstacles such as family pressures, hidden engagements, and financial constraints. The Dashwood family, comprising Mrs. Dashwood, Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret, transitions from a life of luxury at Norland Park to one of uncertainty after their patriarch’s demise.
Following their father’s death, the Dashwoods encounter unwelcome guests, prompting differing reactions from Elinor and Marianne as they navigate the complexities of their new reality.
