Dame Arlene Phillips, a well-known figure from Strictly Come Dancing, recently shared a poignant insight regarding her own mortality. The esteemed dancer and choreographer, aged 82, discussed her father’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and contemplated how she would handle such a challenge herself.

In an interview with The Times, Dame Arlene expressed her thoughts on Alzheimer’s, stating that if she were to face the disease, she would prefer the option of Dignitas. Despite acknowledging differing opinions on this matter, she emphasized the importance of personal choice to avoid burdening loved ones.

Recalling the difficult journey of her father, Abraham, who passed away in 2000 at 89, Dame Arlene described the heartbreaking transformation caused by Alzheimer’s. She vividly recounted the pain of witnessing her father lose recognition and independence, highlighting the emotional toll on caregivers.

Abraham, a former barber, began exhibiting Alzheimer’s symptoms when Dame Arlene was in her early 40s, juggling her career in choreography. She detailed the challenges of caring for her father as he struggled with confusion and memory loss, illustrating the impact on their relationship.

Following her father’s passing, Dame Arlene became an advocate for the Alzheimer’s Society, using her platform to raise awareness about the disease. In a separate interview with the Guardian, she candidly acknowledged her fear of death and expressed disappointment over her departure from Strictly Come Dancing.

Reflecting on her time on the BBC show, Dame Arlene addressed the ongoing debate about contestants with prior dance experience. She emphasized that training did not guarantee victory, citing examples of non-professional dancers who had succeeded on the show. Encouraging viewers to appreciate the contestants’ efforts, she emphasized the unpredictable nature of the competition and the importance of public support.

In conclusion, Dame Arlene urged audiences to embrace the diverse talents showcased on Strictly Come Dancing and celebrate the journey of each participant, regardless of their background in dance.
